Do you know meaning of alphabets written on MCB just before current rating?

Image
What is MCB? MCBs are automatic switches that automatically turn off the power supply when it detects an excessive current. Earlier, this action used to be done by fuses. Though fuses have one disadvantage, they need to be replaced every time there is a short circuit. An MCB, on the other hand, can be manually restarted and is more durable. Types of MCB MCBs are installed in spaces depending on the need of the appliance. Hence, you will find multiple MCB types that can be used for a range of purposes. The most popular MCB types are A, B, C, D, K and Z. Of these, the most commonly used are B, C and D. These categories are often based on their trip curve or tripping capacities. Type A MCB trips off the circuit when the current exceeds 2-3 times the actual current rating. A type MCB – Miniature Circuit Breaker is highly sensitive to the short circuit, and hence we can find its application in the manufacturing of semiconductors. Type B  These are often used in residential properties or...

What are the disadvantages of poor power factor?

Image
Disadvantages of poor  power factor - 1-Greater Copper Losses As at the low power factor, the load current is greater. Therefore, the large load current causes more I^2* R losses in all the components of the supply system. This in turn results in poor efficiency of the system. 2- Large kVA Rating of Equipment The electrical source equipment such as alternators, transformers, switchgears, etc. are always rated in kVA because the power factor of the load is not known when these equipment are manufactured in the factory. Hence, from the definition of power factor, we get, kVA rating=kW / cosϕ That is, the kVA rating of the equipment is inversely proportional to the power factor. Therefore, the lower the power factor, the higher the kVA rating of the equipment. Hence, at low power factor, the kVA rating the equipment needs to be made more which increases the size and cost of the equipment. 3- Larger Conductor Size For transmitting and distributing a constant amount of power at a consta...

Fiber optic cable

Image
What is fiber optics? Fiber optics refers to the technology that transmits information as light pulses along a glass or plastic fiber. A fiber optic cable can contain a varying number of glass fibers, from a few up to a couple hundred. Another glass layer called cladding surrounds the glass fiber core. The buffer tube layer protects the cladding, and a jacket layer acts as the final protective layer for the individual strand. Fiber optic cables are used because of their advantages over copper cables. Some of those benefits include higher bandwidth and transmit speeds. Fiber optics is used for long-distance and high-performance data networking. It is also commonly used in telecommunication services, such as internet, television and telephones. Advantages and disadvantages of fiber optics Advantages- They support higher bandwidth capacities. Light can travel further without needing as much of a signal boost. They are less susceptible to interference, such as electromagnetic interference....

Aluminum wire vs Copper wire-

Image
Copper and aluminum are two of the main choices for wiring in a home and each wiring material comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. ALUMINUM WIRE Advantages- Aluminum wire is generally easier to use than copper because it’s lighter and more malleable, making it an ideal wiring material to use over long distances. Likewise, it is significantly more affordable than copper, so much so that you will generally have half as much copper wire than you would with aluminum for the same cost.  Disadvantages- Aluminum wiring is vulnerable to corrosion and therefore cannot match the lifespan of copper wire.  Likewise, its softness makes it prone to breakage and loose connections. COPPER WIRE Advantages- Copper is the popular choice for many wiring applications, mainly because of its durability and high conductivity.  Disadvantages- It is costlier than aluminum wire.  Apart from its higher cost, it is also heavier, which means it requires the construction of...

Causes of power system failure

Image
Top 6 Causes for power system failures 1- Underground cables Electrochemical treeing of underground power cables is one of the alarming causes for the downscaling of power system reliability. Treeing is a process in which the dielectric strength of an insulating material perishes as a result of moisture penetration while the electric field is still in operation.Once the dielectric strength of the insulating material weakens considerably, a lightning strike or even a switching can destroy the insulation.   Solution for this is one can considerably reduce electrochemical treeing by installing surge protection devices on the electric poles, which are capable of transitioning voltage transients into the ground. Alternatively, one can also purchase cables that are treeing resistant. 2-Transformer breakdowns Transformers are one of the most important components of a distributed power system and can pose a lot of complicacies if they breakdown. Though voltage transients and faults can imp...

Why transformer Ratings are in KVA?

Image
All electrical devices are rated based on the maximum power it can consumes, generates or transfer. Transformers are rated in kVA or VA . Transformers are an energy transfer device that transfers power from the primary side to the secondary side without changing frequency. Why transformers are rated in kVA and why not it is rated in kW like heater, motor and other electrical equipments? 1- Copper loss in transformer depends on the current and the iron loss depends upon the voltage of the transformer. Total losses in a transformer depend upon volt-ampere (VA) only and not on the power factor of the load. This is the reason transformer is rated in KVA and not in KW 2- Transformers are manufactured without considering the load being connected. So any kind of electrical load can be connected it may be resistive, capacitive, inductive or combination loads. If the transformer is rated in KW, there may be confusions regarding the type of load being connected. That is why the transformer ...

Causes of Solar panel Degradation

Image
The degradation of solar panels is not caused by a single phenomenon, but by several degradation factors affecting photovoltaic modules, but mainly due to the aging of the use time. Other causes of solar panel degradation include aging, light induced degradation (LID), potential induced degradation (PID) and backplane failure. 1- Aging caused by service time Aging is the main degradation factor affecting the operating life of PV modules. This degradation is due to the direct consequence of years of exposure of modules to rainfall, snowfall, extreme temperatures, hail, dust and other external factors. When photovoltaic modules are exposed to the above external factors, they will begin to decay and reduce their efficiency over time. This is due to the corrosion of the solar panel frame, the delamination of glass and backplane and the loss of the performance of photovoltaic materials, all of which lead to the degradation of photovoltaic modules by 0.5% per year on average. The solar modul...

Different types of Transformer Faults

Image
A transformer is a device which helps with the transmission of electrical power, it is a static device without any rotating part and is totally enclosed. So the transformer plays a major role in the electrical distribution so the protection of transformers is an important process. The transformer must be protected from faults in order to do effective power distribution. What are the types of transformer faults 1-Over heating Over-heating is caused due to sustained overloads, short circuits and in case of failure of the cooling system, Overexcitation if a transformer is operated at its maximum potential like high frequency or in high voltage the core will get excited. Protection - Resistance temperature indicator can be used near the winding, Thermal overload and temperature relays can be used. Bridge circuits can be used when the bridge is unbalanced more than the permissible duration circuit breaker trips. 2-Winding faults The winding faults are internal faults, over-heating or mechan...

Why Aluminium prefered in transmission line than Copper?

Image
Overhead power line is an important part of power system.  The cost and life of transmission line primarily depend on the material used for making conductor for transmission line. The most important and much suitable material for conductor of transmission line is copper as it having high conductivity and high tensile strength, More ever it is having good ductility. Only Limitation is its cost. With the discovery of practical mass production methods for aluminum processing, the price of aluminum quickly fell, making it a more affordable choice for manufacturers and designers. It takes an aluminum wire with a diameter 1.5 times that of copper to transmit the same amount of electricity, but that wire will be three times lighter, meaning that aluminum is a more efficient material for electrical applications. High voltage overhead power lines are manufactured from aluminum to reduce weight while supplying good conductivity. Aluminum is having sufficient conductivity. More ever it is lig...

What is vampire Energy?

Image
If your electricity bill is unpredictable from month to month or it’s consistently higher than you would like, vampire power may be the culprit. What is Vampire Energy? Vampire power also called phantom power or standby mode, in which appliances consume energy even when they are shut off, can account for up to 20% of your monthly electricity bill. While sitting unused and idle, your TV or toaster oven is sucking money right out of your pocketbook. Why Do Devices Leak Energy? Essentially, every cord that remains plugged into an outlet is still using an electric current. While many devices have sleep or standby modes, they continuously use energy to perform updates, connect to remote servers, and record data. The connectivity of modern technology is one reason why devices leak energy. Even when the TV is off, for example, it’s still ready to receive a signal from the remote to power on at any time. Your DVR is always “lying in wait” until it’s time to record the next show or running behi...
